DeKalb County is centrally located between two major interstate highways.  I-40 is 12 miles north of Smithville via State Route 56 and 8 miles north of Alexandria via State Route 53.  Interstate 24 is 40 miles west and accessible at Murfreesboro via State Route 96 or at Manchester via State Route 56 and 55.  Additionally I-75 is easily accessible from Knoxville as is I-65 at Nashville.

U. S. 70 is the major east-west route through the county.  Currently five (5) lanes from Smithville west to SR 96 at Liberty, construction is planned to the remaining mileage west to Alexandria. 

State Route 53 provides quick and easy access to I-40 from US 70 at Alexandria.

State Route 56 traverses the county from north and south linking Smithville to I-40 on the north and McMinnville and I-24 at Manchester on the south end.

State Route 96 provides a direct route to Murfreesboro and I-24.

Smithville is not directly served by a railroad however, the Nashville and Eastern Railroad is accessible to the west at Watertown, 6 miles from Alexandria and north at Baxter, 20 miles from Smithville.

The Caney Fork & Western Railroad is accessible from McMinnville, 20 miles south of Smithville.

CSX Railroad Main Line is accessible from Murfreesboro, 40 miles west of Smithville and 35 miles west of Alexandria.

Water:

The Cumberland River is the nearest navigable waterway.  The Cumberland joins the Tennessee River and is therefore accessible to the Ohio River, Mississippi River and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico.  The nearest port is at Carthage is 35 miles from Smithville and 20 miles Alexandria.  The Port of Nashville is within 60 miles.
